The Goal
Encouraging refugee children to write in their native language has multiple benefits. Writing in their native language provides a foundation for learning the host country’s language, boosts confidence, and helps maintain cultural identity. Promoting the written practice of native languages does not prohibit other languages, but encourages the use and development of multiple languages. This approach helps children engage in meaningful communication, build connections with peers and teachers, and create more inclusive learning environments. Ultimately, it can lead to better educational outcomes and a greater sense of belonging for all students.
The Method
The use of Google Presentations to create a multilingual visual dictionary has revolutionized language learning, allowing teachers to help their pupils develop their language skills in five different languages (Italian, French, English, Spanish, and Ukrainian). This dynamic resource was created with the help of teachers, and incorporated text, images, and multimedia elements to make the learning experience engaging and interactive. By using a multilingual approach, pupils were exposed to multiple languages at once, allowing them to develop their language skills in a broader context. Through collaboration with their teachers, pupils were able to create a dictionary filled with everyday vocabulary that they could encounter in their daily lives, providing them with a valuable tool to improve their language skills.
What We Found
By leveraging the power of images and sound, the dictionary creates a platform that facilitates communication between pupils of different nationalities. This tool is particularly valuable in enhancing the ethnic identities of pupils who come from diverse backgrounds. The visual and auditory components of the dictionary not only help pupils to develop their language skills but also serve as a bridge between cultures, enabling them to connect with each other in meaningful ways. Ultimately, the use of this resource serves to promote inclusivity, intercultural understanding, and the value of diversity.
How to Start
Stablish a letter exchange in your school. Encourage another school to join you in the exchange of letters between the children. This program enables children to share stories about their respective countries, their current locations, and their personal experiences and memories. By participating in this exchange, children have the opportunity to develop their language skills while also learning about other cultures and making new friends. The letter exchange program serves as a meaningful way to foster cross-cultural understanding and promote the value of multilingualism.
