The Goal

The exercise of bringing a cherished object to school that reveals a part of oneself is a powerful way to encourage students to express themselves and share their personal experiences. Each pupil is asked to think deeply about an object that holds special meaning to them, whether it’s a treasured family heirloom or a mundane item that holds sentimental value. Once the objects are brought to school, each student is given the opportunity to share the story behind their chosen item with the class. The act of sharing personal stories can be transformative, allowing students to build stronger connections with their peers and fostering a sense of community within the classroom. By recording each story as the protagonist describes it to the class, a lasting record is created that preserves the students’ personal narratives. This activity not only promotes self-expression and creativity but also provides a unique opportunity for social-emotional learning and personal growth.

The Method

1. When it comes to self-expression, there are numerous options available.
2. One such option is the use of a video flash, which is essentially a brief, unpretentious video recording.
3. This type of video can be an effective way to communicate a message or tell a story without becoming tedious.
4. By keeping things concise and to the point, video flashes are less likely to bore viewers.
5. Additionally, they can be a great choice for sharing content on social media or other platforms where attention spans may be shorter.
6. Ultimately, the choice of how to talk about oneself depends on personal preference and the desired outcome, but video flashes can be a valuable tool in the right circumstances.

What We Found

Through video connections, the children were able to make new friends and form bonds. As they exchanged ideas with their peers from different schools, they began to work together in teams. This exchange of thoughts and perspectives helped the children to broaden their horizons and develop a deeper understanding of one another. By collaborating and sharing their knowledge, the children were able to learn from each other and develop important skills like communication and cooperation. In this way, the video connections not only helped to create new friendships but also fostered an environment of learning and growth.

How to Start

To encourage the sharing of personal experiences and create a sense of community, the decision was made to ask all pupils to bring in a cherished item to share with the class. This required organizing a suitable time for each pupil to have the opportunity to talk about their item in front of the class. By giving the pupils the chance to share something that was special to them, it allowed them to express their individuality and develop their communication skills. Furthermore, it helped to foster a sense of mutual respect and understanding within the class. The organization of this activity was important to ensure that all pupils were able to participate and have their voices heard, creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.
